In connection with the 2008 Olympic Games an exceptionally large park, the Olympic Forest Park, is being established in the city of Beijing, China. In addition to hosting a temporary stadium during the games, the park is to be of long term multiple benefit for Beijing's habitants and tourists. It is expected to offer a space for recreational activities and to improve the microclimate.
In accordance with the Green Olympics motto the park symbolises the need to take care for a healthy sustainable environment. The plentiful vegetation, the comprehensive closed loop ecosanitary system and the lake fed with recycled water from nearby waste water treatment plants are to convey the green message to the visitors. This report reviews the current state of planning and implementation of the sanitary concept, with the aim to enable optimal use of the harnessed nutrients.
