Priority List of Indicators for Girls’ Menstrual Health and Hygiene
Technical Guidance for National Monitoring
To support countries to monitor progress on MHH for adolescent girls in and out of school, a global collaboration of MHH experts worked together with key stakeholders and leaders from four exemplar countries to develop a short list of priority indicators These indicators monitor MHH across priority domains and are intended to enable comparability across countries and over time.

Adequate and validated indicators are essential for tracking progress on addressing MHH as an important health, education, gender equality, and WASH issue. Monitor your menstrual health and hygiene using activities based on priority indicators and measures for advancing girls' menstrual health and hygiene to support national and global monitoring.

SuSanA at the CSE Conclave in Delhi
24-28 April 2023
We express our gratitude to our esteemed partner, the Center for Sciences and Environment (CSE India) for inviting SuSanA to the 2023 Policy & Practice Forum. We were represented by the Global Steering Committee, the Secretariat, the Forum and the India and Africa Regional Chapters. Our contributions covered several important topics, including urban sanitation, sanitation and climate, resources recovery, and inclusive sanitation. The Forum served as a platform to promote South-South dialogue and knowledge exchange between India and Africa, particularly through the SuSanA India Chapter Meeting. In addition, the much-anticipated in-person SFD PI meeting finally took place, providing invaluable insights into SFD experiences across multiple countries and sparking engaging discussions on the potential and future of the tool. We look forward to repeating this enriching experience!
SuSanA at All Systems Connect Symposium 2023 in The Hague
2-4 May 2023
The SuSanA Secretariat recently attended the All Systems Connect Symposium 2023 in The Hague, actively contributing to sessions and panel discussions focused on youth and women's employment, as well as decolonising the WASH narrative. We shared valuable insights from the Stronger Together initiative, which aims to empower women in the WASH sector, and highlighted the importance of regional exchanges and decentralised discussions through SuSanA regional chapters. In collaboration with other WASH and women's networks, SuSanA once again provided a space for women to connect, mingle and expand their professional networks. The event was a resounding success, and we extend our sincere appreciation to IRC, Water for People and Water for Good for their exceptional organisation of this remarkable symposium.
SuSanA at the 5th Global WOPs Congress and General Assembly in Bonn
22-25 May 2023
UN-Habitat’s GWOPA convened the global water and sanitation utility community at the 5th Global WOPs Congress in Bonn, Germany, on 22-25 May 2023. Reliable water and sanitation services are critical in difficult times, yet conflict, rapid population growth, climate change, ecosystem degradation, and an enduring pandemic are complicating the work of operators.
The congress provided a platform to water, and sanitation practitioners to discuss how collaboration between operators can help them navigate these challenges. SuSanA contributed with three sessions on gender, sanitation workers, and wastewater monitoring. SuSanA side-events were also organized within the conference, including a women mentoring breakfast and a lunch meeting to discuss how to make SuSanA more relevant to technicians, operators, and utilities staff.
WASH Network Circle Meeting
23 May 2023
The concept of a WASH meta-network, also known as a 'Network Circle', was initiated in 2022 to provide a platform for key networks in the sector to collaborate, harmonise their activities and identify synergies. SuSanA took the opportunity of the Global WOPs Congress in Bonn to invite several WASH networks, including FSMA, IWA, GWOPA, SaniHUB, SWEP, pS-Eau, WIN and SSWM, to a hybrid meeting at the GIZ offices. We are very excited to see the Network Circle taking shape and look forward to the collaborative work and outcomes for a more coordinated, synergistic, and cohesive WASH sector.
Humanitarian Sanitation Hub (SaniHub)
Launch of new platform on WASH in humanitarian contexts
There’s a new platform on WASH in humanitarian contexts! The Global WASH Cluster's Technical Working Group on Faecal Sludge Management identified the need for a comprehensive platform on humanitarian sanitation. This led to the creation of the Humanitarian Sanitation Hub (Sani-Hub), supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by a project consortium consisting of BORDA, CAWST, Eawag, IHE Delft, Netherlands Red Cross and Solidarités International under the leadership of the German Toilet Organization. The Sani-Hub aims at bringing together all available global knowledge on planning and implementing sanitation and faecal sludge management in emergencies and enables humanitarian WASH practitioners with simple, quick and easy access to relevant resources and tools.
