RTI International is an independent, nonprofit institute that provides research, development, and technical services to government and commercial clients worldwide. Our mission is to improve the human condition by turning knowledge into practice.
RTI is the implementing partner of the Sanitation Technology Platform (STeP), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). STeP helps transformative sanitation technologies reach the 4.5 billion people worldwide who don't have access to safely managed sanitation by de-risking and accelerating innovative sanitation solutions. We help technology developers, commercial partners, and financing partners develop strong business models, field test products in real-world contexts, and identify and nurture the partnerships needed to achieve impact.
RTI also implements the Nigeria Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Under this project, we expect to improve water delivery to 500,000 households by boosting the productivity and efficiency of State Water Boards (SWBs). Read more on our project page.
Field Testing - field test with local partners in the target markets to inform design and development.

Sanitation Technology Platform
To de-risk and accelerate innovations in sanitation
STeP serves as a platform to de-risk and accelerate innovative sanitation solutions. We help partners - technology developers, commercial partners, and financing partners - navigate the challenge of commercializing new products in emerging markets. We take a holistic, systems approach to commercialization support that integrates market, user, and …

Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services in Nigeria (E-WASH)
Working with state water boards to deliver better urban services to the Nigerian people
In 2018, the U.S. Agency for International Development contracted us to implement the Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services (E-WASH) program to improve the availability of clean water and sanitation in Nigeria’s poorest urban neighborhoods. We expect to improve water delivery to 500,000 households by boosting the productivity and …

Fast Catalyst for Biofuels Production
To demonstrate the ability to convert fecal sludge to a biofuel, which will enhance the sanitation value chain and provide both pit-emptying and central processing facilities with feedstock options.
If this technology can be implemented in a financially sustainable model it will help lower the quantity of fecal sludge that ends up in the drinking water supply. These funds would build on the positive results from the Phase I study, looking at converting fecal waste into a fuel oil, that could be either blended into crude oil, combusted …

Electrochemical disinfection with integrated biomass oven for solid waste processing and energy harvesting
Developing a fully integrated toilet system that combines electrochemical disinfection technology for liquid waste processing and recovery, with a revolutionary new biomass energy conversion unit.
The RTI-led team — which includes individuals at Colorado State University and Duke University — is developing a fully integrated toilet system that combines electrochemical disinfection technology for liquid waste processing and recovery, with a revolutionary new biomass energy conversion unit to both process the solid waste and convert it …

Cocopeat for treating septic tank effluent
To test and commercialize an innovative biofilter medium harvested from crushed coconut shells. Cocopeat, the dust that remains after the coir (fibers) are removed, is proving to be an effective medium for treating wastewater.
We recently launched the first of several demonstration units for our cocopeat wastewater bioreactor technology project. For this component of the study, schools were chosen as the wastewater source for demonstrating the suitability of the technology for difficult applications. Schools represent a bigger challenge than many other sources for …
