Purpose

After successfully piloting the „HappyTap“ - a device that brings together soap and water in an affordable, purpose-built, and attractive handwashing station - WaterSHED will improve, disseminate, and rigorously evaluate the HappyTap in Vietnam.

Activities

The concept of the HappyTap device, originally conceived through the World Bank Water & Sanitation Programme’s Global Handwashing Initiative, is to bring together soap and water in an affordable, purpose-built, and attractive handwashing station that makes hygienic behavior convenient and easy. Developed through a rigorous design and iterative testing phase through 2010, the HappyTap product reflects the right mix of aesthetic appeal, functionality, durability and affordability.

This project is funded under the USAID DIV scheme.

After successfully piloting the HappyTap at Stage 1 (time period: April 2012 to April 2013, with USD 100,000 from DIV plus other sources of funding), WaterSHED re-competed and won DIV Stage 2 funding to improve, disseminate, and rigorously evaluate the HappyTap in Vietnam.

WaterSHED uses a systems-approach to build the rural market for water, sanitation, and hygiene products and services across Southeast Asia. Based in Cambodia, WaterSHED uses in-depth research to identify strategic opportunities and gaps in the wider system, and then works to strengthen the capacity and relationships between key actors to create a more dynamic and resilient market. By engaging key actors in the system, including small businesses, customers, and local government, WaterSHED facilitates the adoption of toilets, water filters, and handwashing stations - building a market that functions independent of traditional aid. To date, WaterSHED's Hands-Off marketing approach has successfully enabled small businesses to sell more than 180.000 toilets, generating more than USD $9 million in revenue for rural businesses, and helping accelerate sanitation coverage from a stagnant 25% to nearly 60% in six years.
