SP10 Human Powered Sludge Pump

Project ongoing since: 2013 • Beaumont

Purpose

To develop and commercialize a low-cost, manually operated, durable pump suitable for desludging watery sludge from pits/tanks in a safe and hygienic manner and increase the profits and quality of the service provided.

Activities

Testing performed in 2016 and 2017 revealed failure modes of the pump that need to be resolved. This work is scheduled for completion in Q1 of 2018 at which time testing will start over.

Objectives

The SP10 Human Powered Sludge Pump was specifically designed for removing human waste from shallow septic tanks and latrine pits within difficult to access communities throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The pump is made largely of materials that can be easily sourced, and it is rugged, easy to use and easy to maintain.

The SP10 can fit into and through spaces where vacuum trucks cannot reach, and is lightweight yet robust enough to maneuver over challenging terrain. The pump is self-priming, making it easy to use. Pumping the handle creates a vacuum within the pump and waste is drawn from the tank into the pump. The strainer catches large debris and materials that can foul or damage the valves and piston. The strainer can be quickly removed and emptied when full. The valves and piston can be quickly accessed for maintenance purposes.
