Reinvented Toilet Phase 4

2017 - 2019 • University of Toronto

Purpose

To test the smoldering Reinvented Toilet prototype, and to support the subsequent design, build, and testing of multiple engineering validation units for foreign field testing.

Activities

Building on progress made to date for an energy efficient, cyclic-continuous household sanitation process based on liquid/solid separation or dewatering, in situ drying, smoldering and post smoldering catalytic conversion of solid excreta, and heat pasteurization of liquid waste, work during this phase will focus on continuing process simplification, improving reactor thermal performance, reducing mechanical complexity, improving robustness, learning about and addressing user behavior, identifying and engaging manufacturing and commercialization partners, and incorporating their input to reduce cost and productize our technology.

Objectives

The goal is a commercially viable sanitation appliance that will be ready for commercial production development.

This grant will be used to continue the development of an integrated household scale sanitation appliance – towards multiple site field studies and towards commercialization.

Further information

This effort supports the BMGF strategy to improve sanitation in the developing world by developing “next-generation” toilets for households, communities and schools.

Projects

The project database contains nearly 400 sanitation projects of many different organizations dealing with research, implementation, advocacy, capacity development etc. Advanced filtering functions and a global map are also available. Information on how and why this database was created is here.

People working for SuSanA partners can add their own projects through their partner profile page. You might need your SuSanA login upgraded for this purpose. Please contact us if you would like to add a project.
