A number of design faults were revealed in this site visit report produced by Richard Holden in his capacity at the time in 2004 as National Operations Support Manager for the Mvula Trust. The site visit took place on the 8 April 2004 in the Ehlanzini distict, where for example it was discovered that the UDDTs rear vault chamber covers were made out of cement and were heavy, easily broken and could not be re-sealed after inspection or emptying. This was later remedied with a new design namely a plastic sliding door that was then retrofitted to all UDDT installations in the eThekwini Water and Sanitation programme.
This report contributes to the "Large-scale Peri-urban and rural sanitation with UDDTs eThekwini Municipality (Durban) South Africa" SuSanA case study.
