Summary:
This report has been prepared in the context of the research project “Integrated Water Resources Management in the Lower Jordan Rift Valley - Sustainable Management of Available Water Resources with Innovative Technologies” (SMART) funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Within this multi-country, multi-disciplinary project, one component deals with research on opportunities for the mobilization of additional water through decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse (WWT&R). This topic is being addressed in a multi-disciplinary way, taking technological, economic, social and institutional
aspects into account.

"Hybrid Constructed Wetland For Small Community Wastewater Treatment And Reuse" - B. El Hamouri, C. Kinsley, A. Crolla (2011)

Summary:
A pilot hybrid constructed wetland system was established in 2007 at the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II in Rabat, Morocco, in order to evaluate and optimize system design for small community wastewater treatment and reuse in Morocco. The technology treats a portion of the campus wastewater (12 m3/d) and occupies 4.5 m2/capita. The hybrid constructed wetland technology is a promising wastewater treatment alternative for small communities in Morocco and for communities with comparable socio-economic and climatic conditions. The system has been shown to function well over four years of continuous operation. The passive wetland technology provides several advantages including: low capital and operating costs, low energy requirements and high levels of treatment. The system produces tertiary quality effluent suitable for direct discharge or for irrigation of forage crops, cereals and fruit trees while reducing pathogen risk and protecting groundwater from excess nitrogen leaching.

Summary:
Wastewater treatment in rural areas of Morocco is significantly lacking, with uncontrolled discharge the norm. Due to a lack of irrigation options, farmers often use untreated wastewater and subject themselves and consumers to significant health risks. In the case of Morocco, approximately 70 million m3 of untreated wastewater are used each year without any sanitary precautions to irrigate an area of more than 7000 hectares. Wastewater treatment technologies with low energy demand and low maintenance requirements are necessary for the sustainable
wastewater management in poor to middle income countries. Treated effluent is an important potential source of irrigation water for arid and semi-arid regions. The system in El Attaouia, Morocco, provides a good example of wastewater treatment and agricultural reuse in an arid climate which can be replicated in similar rural towns and villages.

Il s’agit d’une structure d’enseignement, de recherche, de
démonstration et de formation continue rattachée au Département
de Génie Rural (DGR) de l’Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire
Hassan II à Rabat. Elle est dotée de moyens et d’une infrastructure pilote
orientée vers l’épuration des eaux usées et leur réutilisation
notamment en milieu rural (par exemple avec le RAFADE). La majeure partie des investissements consentis pour l’acquisition de nouveaux équipements et pour le fonctionnement des installations a été mobilisée dans le cadre du projet MEDA Eau financé par l’Union Européenne et dans le cadre
du projet partenariats Universitaires en Coopération et
développement (PUCD) financé par l’ACDI (Canada).

Valorisation agricole des boues résiduaires: Valeur fertilisante et
leur Impact sur les sols

Résumé
Cette étude a consisté à examiner les possibilités de valorisation agricole des boues
résiduaires issues de la station d’épuration par lagunage des eaux usées domestiques de la
ville d’Ouarzazate. Elle a visé comme objectif spécifique l’évaluation de la valeur
fertilisante organique et azotée de ces boues résiduaires, et d’apprécier le rythme de
libération de l’azote minéral. La méthodologie adoptée consistait en deux niveaux de
perception : des incubations au laboratoire sous des conditions contrôlées (Test de Stanford
et Smith, 1972) et, des expérimentations sous serre sous une culture de Ray Grass d’Italie.
Deux types de sols et différentes doses de boues ont été testés. Les résultats obtenus ont
montré que ces boues résiduaires présentent un potentiel important en matière organique et
en éléments fertilisants facilement minéralisable, ainsi qu’une quantité d’azote
potentiellement minéralisable variant de 74 à 185 mg/Kg de sol et demeure croissant avec la
dose de boues apportées. Il a été montré également que l’effet type de sols et la dose des
boues résiduaires incorporées ont influencé la production de la matière sèche et l’azote
prélevé par le Ray Grass d’Italie. Les taux moyens de minéralisation de l’azote organique de
boues résiduaires estimés sont de 51% en conditions optimales du laboratoire (112 jours) et
49% sous serre (200 jours). Ces taux ont une grande utilité dans l’estimation des fournitures
d’azote minéral assimilable après incorporation d’une dose donnée des boues résiduaires.
Un enrichissement en matière organique non humifiée des sols a été observé pour les
différents traitements des boues résiduaires, de même une légère salinisation a été
enregistrée.
