Excerpt from the report 'A Review of Fecal Sludge Management in 12 Cities’ by The World Bank - Water and Sanitation Program. The full report examines global trends in FSM using 12 city case studies as a basis. The objective of review was to the assess the state of FSM at the city level and to start identifying operational tools and areas requiring intervention. This rapid desk-based study was based on secondary data sources supplemented with interviews with key informants. An important output of this study is the development of Fecal Waste Flow Diagrams (SFDs) a tool to access the containment of excreta flows thought the service chain in cities.
