Ventilated improved pit latrines (VIPs) represent the minimum level of sanitation infrastructure that is deemed acceptable in South Africa.
Yet until recently, there has been limited investigation of the factors which determine the rate at which the toilet pits fill, or what impact local ground conditions have on the nature of biological activity within the pit. The paper will discuss the Design and Operating Requirements to Optimize the Life Span of VIP Toilets.
