India hosted the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup tournament. The Government of Odisha was the official host for the tournament that was held from 28 November to 16 December 2018, at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. During the World Cup tournament, about 16 countries participated thus, the city expected many visitors both national and international. It was time for the city administration to prepare the city for the upcoming event.
The State Government and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) started investing in infrastructure, transportation and overall ambience of the city for hosting the event. However, keeping in view the measures proposed by the BMC and other concerned authorities for organising a worldwide event, there was a need to revisit these proposed measures and integrate appropriate and sustainable measures for waste management.
Since it was a worldwide event with international presence of not only the players but also the visitors from across the globe, it was important that spectators and players, take back the pleasant experience and clean image of Bhubaneswar and not a filthy image with garbage lying around the streets. Therefore, the waste of entire city needed to be managed in efficient and effective way. In this light, GIZ in its ongoing support to Government of Odisha, recommended making the event a “zero waste event”.
