Bauphal Municipality is situated within the Bauphal Sub-District (Upazila) in Patuakhali District (Zila), which is under Barishal Division. Bauphal became Upazila in 1983 Paurashava in 2001. The geographical coordinates of Bauphal are 22° 24' 59.7" N and 90° 33' 04.0" E . The municipality is situated 38.1 km northeast from Patuakhali and 240 km southwest from Dhaka. It is bordered by the Upazilas of Patuakhali Sadar and Bakerganj on the west, Dashmina and Galachipa on the south, Bhola Sadar, Burhanuddin, and Lalmohan on the east, and Bakerganj and Bhola Sadar on the north.
According to the population census in 2011 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the population of Bauphal Municipality was 11,435. The urban population growth rate in Bauphal is 1.0% per year. As per the information obtained from Key Informant Interview (KII) at Bauphal Municipality, the present population is around 14,307. The household survey results show that majority of the occupation is business (42%), followed by private service (20%) and agriculture (2%) .

The city does not have a dedicated sewerage system and most sanitation systems available in the town are classified as onsite systems (99.7%). The main types of toilet facilities are septic tanks connected to a soak pit, to an open drain, to a water body or to open ground, lined tanks or lined pits, with no outlet or overflow and unlined pits .

The outcome of the SFD graphic shows that only twenty nine percent (21%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining seventy one percent (79%) is classified as unsafely managed.
