Content - Summary

In the eyes of the public, sanitation is not really seen as a catalyst for human development; for many people, it is a far-fetched, a cranky, and even an unsavoury subject. As a matter of fact, toilettes and wastewater management are surrounded by taboos, and their tremendous importance for public health is completely underestimated. Every day, 5,000 children die of the consequences of dirty water. The stigmatization of the subject is the main obstacle to progress, as was underlined in the “Report on Human Development 2006”, issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). To break this taboo, the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) has taken the initiative and declared 2008 to be the “International Year of Sanitation”.

Nationen auszurufen.
