Irrigation with Grey Water
One way to conserve water is to find ways to use it twice. Many households use more water to keep their lawn and garden green than they use for cooking, cleaning and drinking. Therefore, the reuse of greywater (water that has been used for washing or bathing) for irrigation saves water.
Objective
To find out whether greywater can be used for irrigation and how it effects ornamental plants.
Materials
• At least ten plants (more is better): The plants should all be the same species.
• Greywater, here are some tips: We suggest getting greywater by letting the whole class wash their hands and collect the dirty water in a bucket or using the water from a washing machine. Use a 50:50 mix of soapy wash water and rinse water. Do not use water containing either bleach or fabric softener,
• Waterproof gloves
• Measuring tape
• Lab notebook
• Optional: camera.
