The IWA Specialist Conference on Sludge Management in Circular Economy “SMICE 2018” will be taking place in Rome from the 23rd to the 25th May 2018. SMICE 2018, organized by Water Research Institute of CNR, aims to highlight the coming challenges for scientists and technicians who are pushed to find out new solutions with the common perspective that sludge might be a suitable material for recycling and valorisation into higher-value products.
The water industry is now facing a new age, due to climate change at global level, with consequences on the availability and quality of this resource. This will be reflected on the WWTPs and expected more stringent standards for their upgrading to produce effluents to be reused, reducing contemporarily the sludge-related impacts on air, soil and underground water. Recovery opportunities for phosphorus, bioplastic, bio-methane and other unexpected useful products from sludge line will be the focus of this conference with attention also to the other conventional problems due to the presence of organic micropollutants and pathogens.
