AfricaSan5, 5th AfricaSan Conference
Cape Town, South Africa

18 Feb. 2019 - 22 Feb. 2019

AfricaSan is AMCOW’s path-breaking initiatives to promote prioritization of sanitation and hygiene in Africa. It is a Pan-African initiative to build momentum to address the ongoing epidemic of a lack of access to safe sanitation and large-scale open defecation. It is attended by Ministers responsible for sanitation and the key agencies working in sanitation and water across Africa.

Since its creation, AfricaSan has grown from a conference to a movement with a blend of political support, technical advance and knowledge exchange driving the momentum for improved sanitation in the continent. From its start in 2002 in South Africa with just 13 ministers present, AfricaSan has expanded to include representatives from more than 60 African nations as well as over 1000 attendees. It has lobbied to influence global, regional and national sanitation and hygiene targets; to better make the case for investment in sanitation and hygiene, and to improve sectoral performance. AfricaSan has a unique focus on the establishment and tracking of progress towards achieving the AfricaSan commitments (eThekwini commitments (2008 – 2015) and Ngor commitments (2015 – 2030) as well as the AfricaSan Awards, aimed at honoring governments, organizations and individuals making strides in Africa’s sanitation and hygiene sector.
