Vermifiltration of Wastewater Treatment
Progress and Prospects in India

Partners in the multi-national EU-funded INNOQUA project ( innoqua-project.eu/ ) have developed and demonstrated the potential a novel, modular nature-based, decentralised wastewater treatment solutions in India and ten other countries.

Further Description / Program

These solutions combine the different treatment capabilities of microalgae, bacterial biofilms, Daphnia (“water fleas”) and UV light – but the majority of the treatment in all cases is delivered by interactions between earthworms and bacteria in passively aerated “Lumbrifilters” also knownas “vermifilters”. These unitshave delivered robust performance under a range of environmental conditions in each installation. Recognising that India is a centre for world-class research into Vermifiltration, the INNOQUA team would like to bring together experts to share their experiences of working with earthworms for wastewater treatment and also plan the way Forward for these solutions.
