Greetings from India Sanitation Coalition and SuSanA India Chapter. As you know we are currently hosting a thematic discussion on the operation and maintenance of rural community sanitary complexes. On the 19th of November we are conducting a webinar on this topic.
The background to the webinar is that, under the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Jal Shakti Ministry is prioritising the construction of Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) in rural areas to ensure every household, especially from marginalised communities are reached with sanitation facilities. Experiences under earlier sanitation campaigns have showed that the demand and usage of CSCs is poor. For it to succeed this time, it is important to first understand the barriers and enablers in the different contexts, and build on good practices, experiences and lessons learned.
The Mission is leveraging the Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyaan, a scheme to generate employment in 116 districts. Before the job opportunities in the O&M of community sanitary complexes can materialize, several issues need to be resolved.
We invite you to attend a webinar being hosted by the India Chapter of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, IRC, WaterAid and India Sanitation Coalition where the speakers shall address the following issues:
- Mr. Dibyendu Sarkar, Secretary to Govt of West Bengal: Barriers and enablers for setting up CSCs based on study by Water for People in the State
- Dr Neelam Singh, Chief Functionary, Vatsalya, Lucknow: Continuum of support to ensure CSCs address the needs of women
- Dr Asad Umar, Senior Programme Officer- WASH & Health, Aga Khan Development Network, Delhi: Experiences in engaging with communities in UP and Bihar
- Moderator: Ms. Padmaja Nair, WASH consultant and adviser
