A paradigm shift is needed if the sanitation-related SDGs are to be met by 2030, as business as usual – relying on sewered sanitation only – is no longer an option. Regulators need to support service providers to serve everyone in their mandated areas at the right price and with the right quality, whilst service providers need to ensure that their services meet standards or are improving and moving in the right direction.

This webinar, which is the second in IWA's Regulating for Citywide Inclusive Sanitation series, will address how regulators can rally service providers to expand access to previously neglected areas in cities. The discussion will present the challenges service providers face and will give insights into the needs and opportunities for them to provide inclusive sanitation services. In this webinar, panellists representing service providers and regulators from Malaysia and Kenya will showcase and discuss how regulators can support service providers through using collaborative approaches and incentives as well as how service providers can step up to the challenge of providing good quality, affordable and sustainable services for all.

Participants should ideally have familiarity with SDG 6, some knowledge of the challenges of ensuring inclusive sanitation services for all and a broad understanding of the role of service providers and regulators as well as their interaction in achieving universal access to sanitation services.

Note: The concept of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) is increasingly used and refers to a public service approach to planning and implementing urban sanitation systems to achieve the outcomes summarised in SDG 6: safe, adequate and equitable sustainable sanitation for all in an urban area, regardless of where people are located in the city and what technology is used to deliver this service.

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Understand the roles of regulators, service providers and other relevant stakeholders in achieving CWIS, their interactions, collaboration and how this can vary between different contexts

• Understand the role regulators can play in broadening access to quality sanitation services (whether sewered or not) through working collaboratively with service providers and other role-players and understanding their needs and challenges

• Understand how service providers are working to achieve CWIS and how regulators can shape and incentivise their performance
