1. Save the date: next SuSanA meeting in Kigali, Rwanda (July 2011)Plans are underway to organise the 13th SuSanA meeting alongside the AfricaSan3 in Rwanda. The Rwandan government is hosting the AfricaSan3 conference, which is being organised by the AMCOW Sanitation Task Force, from 19-21 July 2011 in the capital Kigali. The exact dates of the SuSanA meeting shall be conveyed at a later date, but it will most likely be just before AfricaSan3. We are looking for offers from local SuSanA partners who could help us organise this event as well as generate participation of the lregional players in sanitation. Pathways to Sustainable SanitationThis document is a follow-up of the SuSanA Visions Document and provides a number of recommendations on how to bring sustainable sanitation to scale. It was presented at the World Water Week 2009 and forms the basis for key messages from SuSanA that were presented at the African Water Week in 2009. It lays out 8 action oriented "stepping stones" towards up-scaling sustainable sanitation. We are asking the SuSanA community for their endorsement of this document as part of a series of documents forming the SuSanA Roadmap. Factsheet of SuSanA WG 7a Community, rural and schools The aim of this Factsheet is to advocate for sustainable school sanitation by highlighting existing challenges, exploring the various innovations both in hardware and software from examples in Africa, Asia, and South America identifying the common principles that are needed for successful implementation. Factsheet of SuSanA WG 9a Sanitation as a business The fact sheet describes sanitation as a good business opportunity. The challenge is to find and identify effective, scalable, and sustainable sanitation solutions with economic attractiveness and allocate investments and funds to be able to implement the projects. This process needs to be guided by experts of marketers and designers and can effectively be supported by the central and local governmental agencies and NGOs. Factsheet of SuSanA WG 10 Operation and maintenance of sustainable sanitation systems The aims of this factsheet are to introduce possible concepts of O&M for sustainable sanitation systems and to show successful implemented examples for O&M. The target group for this fact sheet consists of sanitation practitioners, researchers and policy makers, as well as of development practitioners who are less familiar with the topic of O&M of sanitation systems. New SuSanA communication toolsTo enhance the communication amongst working group members we have now created e-mail mailing lists for some of the very active working groups. To communicate with other members in your working group you can send an email to the entire working group by using one specific e-mail address (see below). The e-mails will be moderated by the respective working group lead before forwarding them to the rest of the members. Once you register you are automatically a apart of the workin group mailing list which makes it easier for members to communicate among the working groups and for the secretariat to manage the memberships. SuSanA website tips of the monthDid you know that you can now sort the SuSanA case studies (and other publications from the library) by country? It is easy! Access the SuSanA case studies page (http://susana.org/lang-en/case-studies) and click on the interactive map to the right on the region to which the country belongs and you will see a list of countries for which case studies are available. The same can be done for other documents in the SuSanA library, which currently has 748 entries5. GIZ comes into existence (merger of GTZ, DED and Inwent)On 1 January 2011 the number of SuSanA partners reduced by one following the creation of GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) with the merger of the Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (DED) GmbH (German Development Service), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH (German Technical Cooperation) and Inwent – Capacity Building International, Germany. As a federally owned enterprise, GIZ will support the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ now operates in more than 130 countries worldwide and employs approximately 17,000 staff members worldwide http://www.giz.de/en. GIZ also continues to host the secretariat and website management of SuSanA.6. Sustainable Sanitation Practice Journal: Issue 6 with the topic “Toilets”SuSanA partner EcoSan Club Austria has published the sixth issue of the Sustainable Sanitation Practice (SSP) journal. The topic of this issue is: “Toilets”. This issue gives an overview on developments of different technologies for user interfaces, mainly for urine diversion dehydration toilets (UDDTs). The contributions present developments in South America, East Africa and the Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries. New SuSanA partner and staff changesWe warmly welcome SuSanA partner number 136: DORP (Development Organization of The Rural Poor) in Bangladesh who joined us in January. This NGO is working in the field of development in rural Bangladesh since 1990 http://www.dorpbd.org/ .Steffen Blume, who has done a great job in managing and shaping the SuSanA website since two year shas now left the SuSanA secretariat (he has taken up a posting in the water program in Zambia with GIZ). Philipp Feiereisen has taken over his tasks. We wish Steffen all the best and thank him for all his hard work and creative ideas for the SuSanA website!
