1. Online registration for the 18th SuSanA meeting in Stockholm now open
The 18th SuSanA meeting will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on 5 September 2014 (Friday) and 6 September 2014 (Saturday), directly after the Stockholm World Water Week 2014 (SWWW). The meeting will be hosted by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the SuSanA secretariat (located at GIZ).

There is no registration fee for the event but you must cover your own travel expenses and accommodation. Your registration will assist us in the preparations for the meeting, so we require all attendees to register for this reason. 2. Four SuSanA seminars and side events at Stockholm Water Week
Sanitation Business Models for Safe Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR)

The seminar will combine the highlights of research on over 60 successful business cases and extracted business models for resource recovery and reuse in developing countries with a discussion on their applicability in a range of settings with practitioners and entrepreneurs. However, use of human waste presents risks and potential benefits to public health that need to be managed. The Sanitation Safety Planning Manual will also be presented to illustrate the practical implementation of the 2006 WHO Guidelines for Safe Use of Wastewater, Excreta and Greywater.
Streamlining Strategies for Humanitarian Aid in the WASH Sector

Together with the seminar participants the strengths and weaknesses of existing humanitarian aid strategies will be discussed and boiled down to specific recommendations in support of on-going national strategy development processes (e.g. Germany). Dialogue is to be fostered between governments and non-state-actors in order to specifically increase coordination and collaboration, building upon the 2013 seminar called “Aid Effectiveness in the WASH Relief to Development Transition”, which called for actively drawing more humanitarian WASH actors to Stockholm than have been present in past years.
From Faecal Sludge to Fuel: Safe Sanitation with Business Opportunities

This seminar includes two sessions covering all aspects of faecal sludge management (FSM), followed by a multi stakeholder discussion focused on energy recovery and FSM as an integrated approach for sustainable sanitation based on profitable businesses.
New Concepts and Technologies for Sanitation in Emergency Settings

This event will describe how humanitarian agencies have sought to increase private sector and academic engagement in developing sanitation equipment; the new concepts and technologies developed; how they performed in the field; and ask how the work can be taken forward. New technologies include equipment for wastewater treatment, de-sludging, toilets in difficult contexts, alternatives to traditional toilets, and hand washing.
3. Save the date: 19th SuSanA meeting in Dakar Senegal 6-7 October
The AfricaSan 4 will take place from 8-10 October in Dakar, Senegal. To make use of this opportunity the SuSanA Secretariat is planning a two Day SuSanA meeting prior to the AfricaSan in Dakar on the 6 and 7 October. The meeting will build on the developments in the SuSanA meeting in Stockholm and focus on the contributions SuSanA can make in Africa through Africasan. A number of sessions from SuSanA and its partner organisations are planned during the conference. 4. 3rd Anniversary of SuSanA discussion Forum
For the third anniversary of the SuSanA Forum, we went to have a look at some statistical data. We found that the trend of member activity and interaction is almost as positive as new Forum registrations. That means that people who register in the Forum largely do so because they really want to get in contact with members. That again is a good sign for the quality of topics and conversations they find on the Forum. Congratulations to the Forum Users for successful three years!

5. SuSanA launches new website on 12 August 2014
The new SuSanA website will be launched on the 12 August 2014. The new website includes new functionalities, a few examples being working group wiki pages, partner pages that can be edited by the partner organisations and the ability for partners to list projects and research that they are conducting. The diferent new functionalities will be described and discussed in the SuSanA forum post launch.
Note: The current SuSanA website will be offline on 11 August 2014.
6. Update on sharing results from sanitation grants of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has provided co-funding for the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) Discussion Forum for the last 1.5 years and this has catalyzed knowledge exchange amongst experts and engaged citizens within the sanitation, water and hygiene sector.
On the 3rd anniversary of the SuSanA Discussion Forum, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is happy to announce that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has given a follow-up grant to SEI for “Extension of the SuSanA Discussion Forum” (thereby supporting online knowledge management, dissemination and peer discussions of the BMGF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects). The grant is worth 250,000 USD and will span a period of 18 months, starting in July 2014.
The activities of the grant are clustered to support the following three main outputs:
- Make the SuSanA Discussion Forum a highly accessible, comprehensive and authoritative workplace for the water, sanitation & hygiene community around the world.
- Ensure that the kernels of knowledge arising from the many innovative projects funded by the Gates Foundation Water, Sanitation & Hygiene strategy program are put into the hands of the professional community with the aim to disseminate and implement.
- Catalyse communication among professionals within the community in order to enhance learning and exchange of experience.

We are proud of the fact that all the work that the SuSanA members and the SuSanA secretariat have collectively put into this network since 2007, and into the Discussion Forum since 2011, is being recognised in this way by an important actor and donor in the field of sustainable sanitation worldwide, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
7. Forum news
Featured User May 2014: Chris Canaday
We are pleased to announce the Featured forum user for May Chris Canaday for his frequent, considerate, detailed, helpful and interesting forum posts which often have a focus on environmental sustainability aspects.

Chris is one of the earliest members of SuSanA – with registration number 88 – and has been contributing to the forum since the start in 2011. Chris regularly contributes detailed posts, particularly on the theme of urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs), but also on urine diversion processes in general, composting processes, soil microbiology, using compost as cover materials in UDDTs, and on health aspects. Based on his work in Ecuador, he strongly engages on the issues of UDDTs and failings of flush and sewer-based toilets, with a particular emphasis on the importance of environmental sustainability and conservation.
Although Chris is originally from California, USA, he has lived in Ecuador for the last 23 years, where he currently works primarily out of Omaere Ethnobotanical Park.

Featured User, July 2014: Ina Jurga
We are pleased to announce Ina Jurga from Germany as the featured forum user for the month of July.

Ina joined the SuSanA Forum in December 2011 with registration number 1387. Ina regularly contributes to topics on Menstrual Hygiene Management as well as WASH in schools. Based in Berlin after years of international experience, she is now working with WASH United, a partner organisation of SuSanA.
Ina's posts are always worth reading, they are thoughtful, detailed and full of enthusiasm, especially for the "difficult" topic of menstrual hygiene management which - thanks to people like Ina - is now fast becoming an "easier" topic, some even say a fad of the day in development cooperation or at least in the WASH sector in development cooperation. Who would have thought?
Ina is currently working in Berlin, Germany.
